Kate: I studied fashion design at RMIT, Melbourne and was drawn to lingerie because of the amazing trims and fabrics I could use that I couldn’t get away with using on everyday womenswear. It was an area where I could really channel my creative ideas into something wearable and beautiful.
I technically started Kat the Label technically in 2015, but had the Instagram running from 2014 when I was hand making lingerie and sharing my creations online with friends and family. People started asking me how they could purchase and it grew organically after that I moved into working on it full time start of 2016. Its been a whirlwind!
My design philosophy is around always creating something unique, beautiful, functional and creative. It all starts with fabric sourcing; I use only the most unique and intricate fabrics I can find, so that I am ahead of the competition and don’t look at trends. I think focusing on your own design aesthetic and keeping consistent but always growing is very important. People will never guess what you come up with next!
We’ve just launched our new range so it’s still too early to tell, but so far our Gatsby underwire bras are the best seller, with close second the Elizabeth bralette.
Personally my favourite is the Orient underwire bra. I really experimented with tassels this season, so it was great to see my ideas came to life.
